Listening to music online
Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010The move towards listening to music online has been gathering pace slowly. The only real reason for the delay has been the data rates for mobile internet access.Although internet access is free in the office and broadband is provided at flat rates, mobile internet access has been comparatively more expensive to use.
This problem is slowly going away as carriers have started to drop their rates in recent times. Part of the reason for this is the apparent increased reliance on the internet that people have now. Therefore, carriers seem to realize there is more money to be made in numbers than making a killing off a few. This has enabled users to consider listening to internet radio on their mobile devices like their phones or the Apple iPad 3G.
The reason as to why they are switching is that the choice is huge in terms of what you want to listen to. Whether it is jazz music, country, rock, reggae, techno, chill out, soul, top 40 etc., you can find plenty of radio stations that cater to each genre of music. Not only that, the lure of internet radio free of commercials and incessant chatter is a strong one. However, if you want talk radio there are plenty of those too.
As mobile internet becomes cheaper and increases in bandwidth, internet radio could take another twist by providing lots of value added services. How this is taken advantage of (or rather exploited) will be interesting to watch.
